Gede Kresna Works’ Small Industry of Terracotta.
There is high interest of terracotta as an architecture material nowadays, especially for restaurants, villas and houses, but it is still very low compared with ceramics use. Meanwhile, technically and artistically, terracotta material has its own superiority. It relatively has more stable temperature than ceramic, thus it is warm in the evening and cool in the afternoon. As handmade material, terracotta has its own exotic sense which can’t be found in other materials. Moreover, with its production process with almost-reach-zero pollution stage, terracotta should be considered as an alternative material by those who concern with environment issue.
Order
Every order of terracotta at GK Works takes 3 weeks to 1,5 months, depends on the weather. For huge order over 10.000 pieces, it will take 2 – 2,5 months. Order will start to be processed after deposit payment of 50% of total order value.
For standard size of terracotta 30x30cm, order can be finished faster since GK Works always has ready stock of about 2000-5000 pieces.
Transportation and Delivery
Transportation has been an issue for most small industry recently, for GK works as well. Considering of GK Works market which is mostly from outside Bali, transportation takes an important rule in price determination.
For example, standard terracotta 30x30cm with unit price Rp.8500 in Bali will cost at about Rp.10,000 to Rp.11,000 in Jakarta, with assumption of transportation fee from Bali to Jakarta is Rp.4.500.000 for Fuso Truck with 9 tonnages capacity. A Fuso can carry 2650pcs of terracotta, or about 250 square meters. So the price of GK Works’ 30x30cm terracotta in Jakarta is Rp.110,000 to Rp.121,000 per square meters.

Fresh from the Oven
Burning period is over. Pieces of clay which was just like a chocolate change to maroon. This is terracotta’s color. The aroma is so fresh and natural. Up to this stage, all hard works done seem to be meaningless. Because we have changed a pile of something which seems useless become a meaningful natural material.
Burning Process
After all terracotta pieces are sun-dried well, it is the time to put them to the fireplace. The fireplace capacity is not so big. It can only store about 1500 pieces of 30x30cm terracotta. Burning process takes 20-22 hours. It means a person has to be awake in order to keep the continuing heat from the coconut skin as its fuel. If the fire is not well-controlled, it may result broken terracotta at the bottom or “young” ( lack burning ) terracotta at the top, this will cause a fragile quality of terracotta.
Drying Process
Drying process is very tiring. If there is good sun light, it needs 2 days continuously to dry the clay. Imagine if sun light is interfaced by clouds and rain, the whole process will take much longer. However, the real difficulty in drying process is that we always have to turn the clay over all day. We have to turn it over at least 4-5 times a day, if one side only is sun-dried, it will make the clay curved. That’s why this process is very exhausting for the worker, because they have to do the pressing along with entering sun area all the time.

Clay Pressing Process
Clay pressing process uses a very simple machine. Clay bars are put on a certain mold according to our need, for example 30x30cm, 20x20cm, etc. With one spin, the mold will be pressed by a steel plat, this will make the clay inside pressed. After sometime, the plat is lifted, and there we can only see a chocolate-like clay plat. This plat is then cleaned by spatula, being right-angled, then taken up.
Clay Cleaning and Milling Process
Before processed, clay must be cleaned from plant roots, stones and other trash. After cleaned, it is mixed with a little sandstone soil to avoid breaking during burning process. Both kind of soil then mixed well.
After mixed well, clay will be milled by molen machine. The result is clay bars just like chocolate. These chocolate bars are then stored in a room protected from sun light, and ready to mold.

A Glimps About Terracotta
Terracotta has been existing since long time ago. Its discovery areas are all over the world. Where clay soil found, there we can find terracotta. So terracotta was not a special thing actually. But, by technology development, the use of terracotta is left behind, replaced by the use of other materials. For example flooring terracotta, we rarely find this kind of flooring, it is replaced by modern factory-made ceramics, it is cheaper and precision. Meanwhile, the value of terracotta is not at such modern, cheaper and precision point, but at its function as healthy flooring.
We can take an example in Bali, terracotta is used for old persons’ houses. The reason is because terracotta has more stable temperature than other flooring materials. In the afternoon, it relatively cool and in the evening it is not too cold.
The use of terracotta is not limited for flooring only. GKW makes some terracotta designs for wall. Naturally, terracotta wall also has more stable temperature than cement wall. Besides floor and wall, terracotta can be also used for tiles and some of its accessories.
Most of all, terracotta is an alternative to create healthier and more natural buildings and the most important it is very much cheaper.
